FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM
LIVE AT THE ASTORIA MAY 24, 2007
BY DUNCAN BRYCELAND
ALTERNATIVE MAGAZINE

Appropriately, the haunting "24th Moment" preludes the arrival of Carl McCoy and his "Ghost Musicians." The spacious atmospherics of "Shroud" immediately create an immense aura that reflects the uniqueness of the Nephilim and realization of how much this legendary band has been missed from the live arena for such a long time.

The high-octane "Straight To The Light" immediately inflames the audience, with the sheer ferocity of the more metal-edged "Penetration" and "Xodus" blowing away any thoughts of this being a play-safe, best-of set for the faithful. The eerie intro of the cinematic "Dawnrazor" sends shivers down the spine, compelling fans to throw their arms skyward and inciting human pyramids in a time-stopping moment.

The gothic-rock anthem "Moonchild" enraptures the captivated audience, which is mesmerized by McCoy's presence as he leers over the mic stand, eyes piercing and wolf-like. "Last Exit For The Lost" inspires huge roars throughout the venue. As McCoy sings, "We will rise again" during the closer, "Mourning Sun" he stands in Jesus Christ pose, like a returning messiah to the legions of devout fans. The reincarnation of the Nephilim is complete.
