- Zillo Festival 1998 Fields of the Nephilim AD press conference

OTHER BANDS FEATURING MEMBERS OF FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM OR
NEFILIM
- SENSORIUM
In 1996, shortly after Zoon was released, Carl fell out with Beggars
Banquet over tour plans and left the record label in 1997. In mid-1996,
Simon Rippin and Paul Miles, formerly of The Nefilim, and currently
assisting Fields of the Nephilim AD, formed Sensorium (after the Nefilim
song of the same name). They teamed up with a vocalist called Peter "Bob"
White. They have toured Europe and the UK. The band have released an
album called Jahazralah.
- SAINTS OF EDEN
This band features Cian Houchin, formerly of Nefilim.
- SUBMERGE
Paul Miles' latest musical venture.
ALEISTER CROWLEY
The late Aleister Crowley made some Edison Wax Cylinder Recordings of
himself reciting his poetry, amongst other text. For several years
these recordings were privately circulated, but have since been
commercially released. The original wax cylinders will be worth a small
fortune, if they still exist.
The Great Beast Speaks - Edison Wax Clydiner recordings of Aleister
Crowley:
Track list: The Call of the First Aethyr (Enochian and English Versions),
The Call of the Second Aethyr (Enochian and English versions), La
Gitana, The Pentagram, One Sovereign for the Woman, The Poet, At Sea,
The Fingernails, The Titanic, Hymn to the American People, Excerpts from
the Gnostic Mass, Vive La French Republic)
Formats:
- Compact Disc (digitally remastered and released by Disgust, disgust1)
(Fields of the Nephilim used At Sea and La Gitana in At The Gates Of Silent
Memory and remixes of Submission. Carl also used At Sea and The Poet in
live versions of Psychonaut during his 2000 AD European festival tour. I
also think that a very small snippet of The Poet appears in "Dead To The
World/The Way That We Were/Thirst, the line being... "Worship and liberty
and love.")
666 - Aleister Crowley (released in England in 2000):
Formats:
- Compact Disc (Metro450, produced by Dressed to Kill, distributed by BMG)
(666 includes The Great Beast Speaks recordings, but also some rather
crap digitised music; probably thrown in to encourage gullible people to
buy it thinking they are buying new Crowley recordings!)
FILMS
Hardware:
Year: 1990
Director: Richard Stanley
Company: Palace Productions
Formats:
- VHS video cassette (Palace PVC 2174S)
- 10 minute trailer (as shown at a horror film event called Splatterfest
in 1990)
- The soundtrack to the film, on Compact Disc
(A superb film. Carl McCoy makes a cameo in Hardware as The Zone
Tripper, a post-apocalyptic rag and bone man who discovers the broken
remains of a military android in a radioactive wasteland and sells it to
an off-duty soldier of fortune. The solider gives the remains to his
sculptress girlfriend Jill, who welds it into and onto one of her
sculptures. The android is self-repairing and rebuilds itself. Its
programmed to kill. And after killing Jill's voyeuristic neighbour, it
goes after Jill herself. Jill's flat becomes a battleground and there
can be only one victor.)
Dust Devil - The Final Cut:
Year: 1992
Director: Richard Stanley
Company: Palace Productions/The Shadow Theatre
Formats:
- VHS video cassette (Polygram video 088 900 3)
(Richard Stanley's second film, featuring a demon called the Dust Devil
who's trapped on earth and uses ritualistic acts of murder to gain
sufficient power to enable it to return to its homeland. Wendy is a sad
lady running from a broken marriage. The Dust Devil meets its match in
Wendy, who refuses to let him kill her. A troubled Nambian Police
Officer is on the trail of the Dust Devil, armed with a shotgun and the
wisdom of a local Shaman. Can he stop the Dust Devil from taking
another life? Well worth watching, although Carl McCoy does not appear.
Based on two true stories and filmed entirely on location in the
Nambian desert. Richard Stanley directed the Fields of the Nephilim
promo videos Preacherman and Blue Water and is a friend of Carl Mcoy.
Other versions of Dust Devil are available, but the UK Final Cut is
Richard Stanley's preferred version which he completed with The Shadow
Theatre after Palace Productions went bust).
The 13th Sign:
Year: 2000
Company: Paranoid Celluloid
Formats:
- VHS video cassette
- UK Region DVD
(Carl McCoy had his finger in the pie with regard to this horror film.
He worked as one of the cameramen and also voiced one of the villains.
One More Nightmare, and possibly Darkcell AD also, was used in the
credits. Indeed, on the cover of One More Nightmare it states that the
music was originally for a Nephilim film project).
MISCELLANEOUS
SHEER FAITH / CARL'S VIDEO PRODUCTION COMPANY / WATCHMAN UK:
"Sheer Faith" is believed to be the name of Lynn and Carl McCoy's
artistic partnership, founded sometime in the late 1980s. Sheer Faith
produced the artwork for a number of Fields of the Nephilim and The
Nefilim album and single covers. Carl McCoy has produced artwork for
some of Storm Constantine's books. Lynn and Carl offered advice to
Andrew Collins, when the latter was writing a book on the Nephilim
legends entitled "From The Ashes Of Angels". The McCoy household is
very creative; art, music, lyric writing, film projects, motorbikes (the
latter is believed to be one of Carl's other passions).
In the Jungle Records-issued interview with Greg Karajiannis, Carl
explains that he has formed his own video production team. Whether this
is Paranoid Celluloid (the company behind "The 13th Sign"), or just an
extension of Sheer Faith, the author is unable to clarify at the time of
writing.
Carl McCoy is also believed to be a qualified mechanic. Q Magazine
reported, in 1999, that Tony Pettitt owns (or did own) his own recording
studio on the outskirts of Stevenage.
Watchman UK is Carl McCoy's fan club. Although dormant at the time of
writing, it will be re-activated in the near future. It was originally
run by Steve Brown (Carl's ex-manager), it was run by Lynn and Alex in
the early 1990s. A web-site is being prepared at the time of writing.
MERCHANDISE:
As with any band, there has been merchandise released for Rubicon,
Fields of the Nephilim, The Nefilim, etc.
These include baseball caps, sew-on patches, posters, postcards,
Dawnrazor Bic razors, Dawnrazor wrist watches, t-shirts, sweatshirts,
lighters, bottle openers, press kits, fanzines, The Watchman UK fan club
newsletters, concert tickets, tour passes, badges, Elizium bags of flour
(German promotional item), promotional cardbox items.
There have been interviews and reviews in magazines as diverse as Zillo,
Melody Maker, House of Dolls, Elegy, Sonic Seducer, Cornerstone, Siren,
Infected, etc. There have been the odd television appearance; Carl
McCoy on MTV in 1996 to promote Zoon, Fields of the Nephilim on Top of
the Pops, I also seem to recall a Rubicon promotional video on the
defunct The Chart Show. I understand that Fields of the Nephilim songs
have been heard in both Emerdale Farm and Miami Vice.
Various bootlegs are in circulation, some of which are listed in the
discography. With CD Burners now domestically available, CD bootlegs
will become more prevalent.
TERMINOLOGY
Acetate:
Acetates are pressed to check the quality of work in progress by the
producer and artist. Made of aluminium with a coating of vinyl-like
material, they are only suitable for a few plays as the coating wears
out quickly. Often one-side, these tend to be extremely valuable.
Test pressing / white (or sometimes black) labels:
The first factory pressings of a single or album. Circulated to
reviewers, in recent years white labels have been largely replaced by
CD-R acetates. Sought after due to their pre-release status.
Promo / promotional:
Memorabilia or audio-visual material, issued soley to the media to
promote a forthcoming release. Sometimes contain unique mixes,
compilations or artwork, making them particularly rare.
Withdrawn:
These are records removed from sale before or after reaching the shops.
Tend to be much sought-after collectables.
Gatefold:
A sleeve on an album or single, which opens like a book. Particularly
popular in the 1960s and the 1970s. It's the initial gatefold editions
that are most desirable.
Deleted:
No longer being re-pressed. No longer available to buy brand new from
Record Company or shops, only obtainable second-hand.
Flexi-discs:
Vinyl records made out of a floppy flexible plastic material. Usually
flexis are samplers, given away to promote a release of a record or
given away as freebies with magazines. Popular in the 1980s, they have
been superceded by compact discs.
Bootleg:
An illegally produced record, CD, tape, video, audio-video CDR, music
CDR, or downloadable MP3. Usually containing concerts, live
performances or hitherto unreleased tracks by the artist concerned.
Often produced in tiny quantities, making some titles very collectable.
Before the advent of CD Burners, bootlegging was the preserve of
dishonest record companies or criminal bootleggers with a dubbing set-up
that enabled them to make bootlegs on a commercial scale. But with MP3
and CD Burning techology now domestically available, this will be the
future of bootlegging (e.g., Napster, CDRs in prviate circulation).
Interestingly, whist cassette tape recorders have been around for many
years, most Fields of the Nephilim bootlegs from the 1980s and early
1990s were either released as vinyl records or CDs.
Picture Disc:
A record pressed on clear vinyl, in the middle of which is sandwiched a
picture. Compact Discs also get released as picture discs, i.e., with
pictures on the face of the CD where one would normally print the name
of the CD and its track listings. Sometimes available as shapes and are
specifically aimed at collectors.
Counterfeit:
Illegally produced copy of an official release, designed either to
capitalise on the original's rarity or to steal money directly from the
record company.
Sampler:
Promotional compilations on CD or vinyl, usually pressed and issued to
the media to promote an artist's back catalogue or current release.
Sometimes samplers are released to promote a record labels' catalogue of
signed bands to the paying public (Deafening Divinities With Aural
Affinities is one such example, whereby it was commercially available,
not just the preserve of the music press).
